The trichology unit at dermaMER Instituto Médico Dermatológico, at Calle Timoneda 4 in Valencia, diagnoses and treats hair loss and scalp conditions. It is staffed by three specialist dermatologists trained through Spain’s MIR system: Dr. Manuel Ballesteros Redondo, Dr. Enrico Giorgio Morales Tedone and Dr. Román Ballesteros Redondo. The first consultation includes digital trichoscopy. Consultations are available in Spanish, English and Italian.
What trichology is and who should treat your hair
Trichology is the area of dermatology concerned with the hair, scalp and related conditions. In Spain, it is not a separate medical specialty. The doctor specialising in hair conditions is a dermatologist: they can diagnose the cause of hair loss, request blood tests, perform a biopsy when needed and prescribe treatment. This is why every trichology consultation at dermaMER is carried out by a dermatologist.
You should consider booking an appointment if you notice any of these signs:
- heavy hair shedding lasting more than three months;
- a widening parting or reduced density at the crown;
- receding temples, a receding frontal hairline or loss of eyebrow hair;
- round bald patches that appear over a few weeks;
- itching, flaking, pain or redness on the scalp.
What we treat at the trichology unit
- Hair loss: telogen effluvium and other forms of diffuse hair loss. The first step is to find the cause.
- Androgenetic alopecia: common pattern hair loss with a genetic and hormonal basis. It can be slowed down, but not cured.
- Female hair loss: loss of hair density in women, after first ruling out other treatable causes.
- Alopecia areata: bald patches of autoimmune origin in adults and children.
- Frontal fibrosing alopecia: a scarring alopecia in which early diagnosis is particularly important.
We also assess other scarring alopecias and scalp conditions, such as seborrhoeic dermatitis and fungal infections.

How we diagnose
Every initial trichology consultation includes digital trichoscopy. This non-invasive examination magnifies the scalp and hair follicles to identify the type of alopecia. We save reference images of the same areas so they can be compared at each review and the response to treatment can be measured using objective data. If needed, we complete the assessment with blood tests or, in cases of scarring alopecia, a biopsy.
Treatment according to the diagnosis
There is no single treatment for hair loss. The plan is decided after diagnosis and may combine:
- topical or oral medical treatment tailored to the cause, age and circumstances of each patient;
- scalp mesotherapy, involving injections into the scalp;
- scalp platelet-rich plasma (PRP), as a supportive treatment.
We explain what each option can achieve and its limitations. For most alopecias, the realistic aim is to slow down hair loss and, for some patients, improve density. The benefit lasts only while treatment continues.
Who makes up the unit
The unit comprises dermaMER’s three founding partners, all dermatologists with recent MIR training and rotations in hospital trichology units:
- Dr. Manuel Ballesteros Redondo. MIR training at Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia (2019-2023). He completed rotations at the trichology unit of Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal and at Grupo Pedro Jaén (Madrid). He was part of the trichology unit at Instituto Médico Ricart (2023-2025).
- Dr. Enrico Giorgio Morales Tedone. MIR training at Hospital Clínico Universitario de Valencia (2020-2024). He was part of the trichology unit at Instituto Médico Ricart (2024-2025) and has presented a paper at the national meeting of the Grupo Español de Tricología y Onicología of the AEDV. He also sees patients in Italian.
- Dr. Román Ballesteros Redondo. MIR training at Hospital Universitario Donostia (2021-2025). He completed a trichology and laser rotation at Hospital Universitario Ramón y Cajal (Madrid, 2024).
All three are members of the Academia Española de Dermatología y Venereología (AEDV) and attend meetings of its Grupo Español de Tricología y Onicología.

- You don’t need a referral.

Frequently asked questions about trichology
Is a trichologist the same as a dermatologist?
Not necessarily. In Spain, «trichologist» is not a medical specialty title and is also used by professionals who are not doctors. At dermaMER, trichology is provided by dermatologists: specialist doctors who can diagnose, request tests and prescribe treatment.
How much does the first trichology consultation in Valencia cost?
At dermaMER it costs 125 € and includes digital trichoscopy. Treatments are quoted separately after diagnosis. See all our fees.
Can I use my health insurance?
The dermatology consultation is usually covered, subject to your insurer’s conditions; see the list of insurers. Digital trichoscopy and in-clinic hair treatments, such as mesotherapy or PRP, are not usually covered and are paid for separately.
Do you see children?
Yes. We see children from the age of 10, for example for alopecia areata or scalp ringworm.
Do hair loss treatments work?
It depends on the cause. Some forms of hair loss, such as telogen effluvium, usually recover once the trigger has been addressed. Androgenetic alopecia can be slowed down, but not cured. In scarring alopecias, the aim is to stop progression. This is why we do not make promises: we explain what you can reasonably expect in your case.
Do you offer consultations in English or Italian?
Yes. All three dermatologists see patients in Spanish and English, and Dr. Enrico Giorgio Morales Tedone also sees patients in Italian.
