Microneedling is an in-clinic skincare treatment designed to improve skin quality and texture with very short recovery. Microneedles create controlled microscopic channels that stimulate skin renewal and allow application of active ingredients selected for this procedure.
It is particularly useful when seeking gradual treatment with little recovery time and generally mild, temporary side effects. It does not offer the remodelling intensity of fractional laser for deep scars or significant skin damage, but also involves less injury and recovery.
At dermaMER, we recommend it according to the concern you want to improve and use only products suitable for application to microneedled skin.
What it is and how it works
Microneedles create controlled micropunctures that activate skin repair mechanisms and gradually stimulate collagen formation.
These microchannels also temporarily increase skin permeability. During the procedure, this allows application of active ingredients specifically selected and suitable for this route, helping them reach deeper skin layers than conventional cosmetic application.
We do not apply just any cosmetic or ampoule to freshly punctured skin. Product selection is part of treatment and must follow safety criteria.
Controlled micropunctures
A sterile single-use cartridge; depth is tailored to area and goal.
Microchannels
They activate skin repair mechanisms and temporarily increase permeability.
Selected active ingredients
During treatment, active ingredients specifically selected for this route are applied.
Short recovery, gradual sessions
Redness and warmth for the first hours or a day; treatment normally requires several sessions.
What it is used for
Microneedling may improve texture, visible pores, fine lines and superficial scars, and form part of programmes to improve overall skin quality.
Careful patient selection matters for acne scars: microneedling has a limited role. Deep, narrow or strongly tethered scars respond poorly and require more intensive techniques such as CO₂ laser, or other procedures. We advise the most suitable scar treatment during consultation.
The main advantage over more aggressive techniques is not an equivalent result with less treatment: it does not achieve that. Its advantage is a gentler, repeatable intervention with much shorter recovery when suitable for the concern.
The procedure and number of sessions
This is performed in a treatment room. After skin assessment, the area is cleaned and disinfected and a new, sterile, single-use cartridge used. Depth is tailored to area and goal.
During treatment, we may apply specifically selected active ingredients to use the temporary permeability increase created by microchannels. Not all products are suitable.
Treatment is gradual and normally needs several sessions. Number and interval depend on the concern and skin response.
Results, duration and limitations
Results are gradual. Skin may temporarily look firmer immediately after a session because of redness and swelling, but actual remodelling takes time.
For texture and skin quality, we aim for more even, uniform skin. For scars, the aim is reduced contrast and softer irregularities rather than removal.
Microneedling offers a different balance from laser: less remodelling capacity, but much shorter recovery. This makes it useful for patients who do not want or need an ablative procedure.
What it cannot do
It cannot achieve fractional laser remodelling for moderate or severe scars or correct deep or tethered scars alone.
Nor does it eliminate pores, stretch marks or scars, or replace surgery for significant structural changes.
Its value is treating selected indications with less injury and much faster recovery.
Risks and contraindications
Redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, dryness and small crusts for a few days are common.
It should be postponed or avoided with active infection or herpes.
Home skin-puncturing devices risk infection, scarring and spreading herpes or warts; radiofrequency devices must not be used outside a clinical setting.
Recovery and your first consultation at dermaMER
One main advantage of conventional microneedling is almost immediate return to everyday activities. Redness, warmth or slight tightness are common for the first few hours and, in some patients, one or several days.
Recovery and expected side effects are clearly lower than with ablative laser. This does not mean it is risk-free or should be performed without proper assessment.
At the first consultation, we assess your skin, treatment goal, any active acne and history affecting suitability. We explain what microneedling can achieve and when laser or another technique is more appropriate.
It is part of our aesthetic medicine and laser service in Valencia, available in Spanish, English and Italian. As a cosmetic treatment, it is not usually covered by health insurance policies and is paid for separately. A registered dermatologist recommends it and specialised staff perform it under medical supervision, with a quote at assessment. You can check our indicative prices on the Fees page.
You can meet the medical team before your visit.
Frequently asked questions about microneedling
What results can I expect?
Gradual improvement in skin texture and quality. It may soften some irregularities in superficial scars. Deep scars require techniques such as CO₂ or non-ablative fractional laser.
Does it hurt?
It can usually be performed without anaesthetic. If uncomfortable, we apply anaesthetic cream before continuing.
How many sessions do I need?
Three to five sessions a few weeks apart are common. There is no universal number: it depends on phototype and combination with other techniques.
Can active ingredients be applied during microneedling?
Yes. Microchannels temporarily increase permeability and allow application of ingredients specifically selected for this procedure. Not every cosmetic or ampoule is suitable.
When can I return to normal activities?
Conventional microneedling recovery is very quick, allowing everyday activities in most cases. Redness or warmth may remain for the first hours or days.
Can I have it in summer or with tanned skin?
As it does not rely on heat or light, it can be performed year-round. Even so, we assess phototype and tanning beforehand.
Do home microneedling rollers help?
No. Home skin-puncturing devices risk infection, scarring and spreading herpes or warts. Radiofrequency devices must not be used outside a clinical setting.
Does health insurance cover it?
No. Cosmetic treatments are not usually covered by health insurance policies and are paid for separately, with a quote at assessment. The dermatology consultation for active acne is usually covered, subject to your insurer’s conditions. You can check the insurers we work with.
